Each year, CI awards the Construction Engineering Scholarship to students of civil and construction engineering. John Courtney, Andre Hawks, and Giuseppe Canzonieri were each chosen to receive the 2006 Construction Engineering Scholarships.

John Courtney grew up in El Dorado Hills, CA. He earned his Eagle Scout Award in July 2001. In August 2003 John began attending the Colorado School of Mines to study Civil Engineering. He has enjoyed success as a student, making the Dean’s List twice. As a sophomore, John helped a group of students form the first internet radio station at the Colorado School of Mines, Mines Internet Radio. Now, as a senior, John holds the position of Sports Director for Mines Internet Radio and is the Secretary for the ASCE Student Chapter.
Andre Hawks is a senior at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, CA. During
his college years, he has been invited to be a member of two Engineering Honor

Societies, Chi Epsilon (National Civil Engineering Honor Society) and Tau Beta Pi (National General Engineering Honor Society). “Both of these Honor Societies have shown me that I am performing at a high level and that I have been recognized as being within the top of my engineering class,” Hawks writes in a background statement provided to CI. He was also the recipient of the Tony Garcia Award, which recognizes the most active Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) member in the community, at the 2006 SHPE End of Year Banquet. Andre also made the College of Engineering’s Dean’s list for 10 out of 11 quarters at Cal Poly and was elected to the National Dean’s List. He is also a member of both Mortar Board and Golden Key Honor Society.

Giuseppe Canzonieri is going into his sixth and final year in the Civil Engineering Department at Cal Poly Pomona. While at Cal Poly, he has been a member of clubs such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers Association, as well as the National Civil Engineers Honor Society, Chi Epsilon. This past year, he served as the ASCE Membership Chair and Chi Epsilon Treasurer. In the coming school year, he will be the External Vice President of ASCE. Canzonieri is also active in professional development outside of school. In April 2006, he took the FE Exam and is now an official EIT. He is at present working for a transportation engineering firm, Katz, Okitsu & Associates, where he helps the engineers in drafting and revising traffic signal, signing and striping, street improvement and highway design plans. Giuseppe has also worked for Sawaya Engineering Inc., a small and local land development firm, and the City of Los Angeles Bureau of Engineering Bridge Improvement Program.

The Construction Engineering Scholarship is awarded to a student or students based upon an applicant’s educational plan, academic performance and standing, potential for development, leadership capacity, and financial need.
