ASCE seeks energetic individuals to assume the duties of editor for two construction oriented journals. Two positions are available, one with the Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction and one with the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management.
The Practice Periodical on Structural Design and Construction is published four times each year and is overseen by a team of four Executive Editors and four Forum Editors, equally divided between structural design and construction interests. The practice periodical publishes articles about practical solutions to structural design problems and construction challenges of interest to practitioners. The ideal editor is an active practitioner or someone with considerable practical experience, with an interest in conveying practical information to the civil engineering community.
The Journal of Construction Engineering and Management is published monthly. The editorial board consists of the editor, an associate editor, and a number of specialty editors. Articles selected for publication in this journal aim to progress the science of construction engineering, relate practice to design theory, and promote education and research in the field. The ideal editor has practical experience in the field and has knowledge of a variety of construction topics.
The editor’s primary responsibilities, for both publications, are to review new submissions promptly, build the publication’s content, and uphold quality control standards. With assistance from the staff of the ASCE Journals Department, the editor encourages spontaneous submissions of new articles on a variety of subjects within the publication’s scope and may oversee occasional development of theme issues. The editor is also the publication’s standard bearer, helping to promote it in the engineering community. Specific duties are outlined in the Editors’ and Reviewers’ Guide to the Journals of ASCE, available upon request from Journal-Services@asce.org. The editor normally serves a 2–4-year term.
Desirable traits in a candidate for editor include breadth of knowledge in the area of interest, maintenance of high standards in his or her profession, demonstrated ability to meet commitments, good organization, and ability to make difficult decisions.
If you are interested in applying for the position outlined, please send a cover letter and resume, including a statement of interest in the position and how your qualifications and relevant experience support your application, to the Construction Institute of ASCE, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, VA 20191-4400.
