CII Selects Dr. Dan Halpin for Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence

Daniel Halpin, Hon.M.ASCE was recently awarded the Carroll H. Dunn Award of Excellence by the Construction Industry Institute. This award is given to an individual deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the improvement of the engineering and construction industry. Halpin was presented with this award at the CII Annual Conference in July.

Dr. Halpin received his bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and went on to complete his master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Illinois. Over the course of his career, he has held positions at Georgia Tech and the University of Maryland. His most recent position was as Head of the Division of Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue University, from which he retired in January 2006.

Recognized as an authority on the simulation of construction processes, Halpin has left his mark on the industry. He developed the CYCLONE simulation system, which is used widely by engineering and construction researchers. In addition, he authored the textbook Construction Management, which is used in engineering classrooms in most engineering programs. He also helped to create the Construction Industry Institute, a research center at The University of Texas at Austin and served as the principal investigator on many of the early CII research projects. He was also instrumental in creating the CII Emerging Technologies website.

Halpin has contributed to ASCE in a variety of capacities. He was a founder of CI’s Construction Research Council and received the Peurifoy Award in 1999. He also served on the ASCE Construction Management Committee and the Estimating and Cost Control Committee, as well as several other ASCE committees.
