Four CI Members Inducted As ASCE Honorary Members

Submitted by Jane Alspach, Senior Manager of ASCE Honors and Awards

The American Society of Civil Engineers recently recognized the accomplishments of four Construction Institute members by inducting them as Honorary Members. John F. Graham, Jr.; Daniel W. Halpin; Donn E. Hancher; and William W. Moss were honored at the Gala Banquet on October 20, 2006 at the Westin River North Hotel in downtown Chicago.

John F. (Fred) Graham is known for his work with the Allegheny County Department of Works, Engineering and Construction and Capital Projects where he worked from 1958 to 1992, minus service time in the U.S. Army Signal Corps at Aberdeen Proving

Grounds. His most notable accomplishment was the management of the design and construction of the $800 million Pittsburgh International Airport, Midfield Terminal Complex. This project was completed on time and within budget. Prior, he was at the nation’s forefront to fund and rehabilitate historic bridges and he continues this effort

at present.

Dr. Daniel W. Halpin is generally recognized as one of the leading authorities in the world on the use of simulation in studying construction processes. He is the developer of the CYCLONE simulation system. Based on Professor Halpin’s research in this area, construction simulation has become an essential part of university construction engineering curricula. He is the author of numerous books and papers. His basic textbook, Construction Management, published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc., has been one of the two or three dominant texts introducing engineering students to the concepts of construction engineering over the past 25 years. Dr. Halpin was educated at the U.S. Military Academy, receiving a B.S. degree in 1961. He later earned M.S.CE and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. He recently retired as the Bowen Head, Division of Construction Engineering and Management and is Professor Emeritus in the School of Civil Engineering at Purdue University.

The Terrell-McDowell Chair Professor of Construction Engineering and Management and Associate Dean of Engineering for Administration and Academic Affairs, Dr. Donn E. Hancher played a major role in the creation, development and administration of the ABET-accredited undergraduate program in Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue University, established in 1976. He served as a member of the University-Industry task force which helped establish and implement the program. From 1979 to 1988, Dr. Hancher served as Associate Head of the Program, responsible for its academic affairs. He guided efforts to establish the Purdue Society of Construction Engineers, a student society, and the Beta Tau Fraternity, an honorary fraternity, for construction engineering students at Purdue.

William W. Moss is President of Moss Enterprises, Inc, which he founded in 1978. He has had a significant impact on the welfare and well being of Alabama and the nation over the many years he has held responsible engineering positions. These achievements have been in designing and constructing state-of-the-art highways and racetracks including the Talladega Super Speedway in Talladega, Alabama.Mr. Moss headed the team that created the steeply banked racetrack that has become the heart and soul of motor sports in Alabama. At the time his affiliation was with Moss Thornton Company a firm also responsible for completing the first phase of Birmingham’s Red Mountain Expressway, a feat that lives in Alabama’s engineering annals.

Honorary Membership is the highest award the Society may confer, second only to the title of ASCE President. Honorary Members on this prestigious and highly selective list have attained acknowledged eminence in a branch of engineering or its related arts and sciences.
