The American Arbitration Association will be holding its annual Construction Conference on Friday, May 30, 2008, at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York in New York, NY.

CI Board Welcomes Chris Reseigh

Chris Reseigh, the Global Director of Program and Construction management services for Parsons Brinckerhoff, recently joined the CI Board of Directors as Director of the Construction Directorate. In this capacity, he oversees the activities of the construction-oriented technical committees and provides guidance on fiscal and strategic planning matters. Chris has an MES degree in Highway Engineering from the University of New South Wales, a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Melbourne, and attended the Duke University Business School of Executive Management.

Chris is the former President and Chief Operating Officer of Parsons Brinckerhoff Construction Services, Inc., the US-based program and construction management company, and served on the firm's Global Management committee. He also served as chair of PB Constructors, the firm's "at-risk construction entity." While he was President, PB's construction services grew six-fold and expanded to almost every state in the Union.

His career in engineering and construction management began in his native Australia and spans more than 40 years. He is a Principal Professional Associate, Principal Project Manager in the firm and a PE in many states. He is also the Principal-in-Charge on PB's major Aviation PM/CM Projects. Some of his projects include the Second Avenue Subway in New York City, the Atlanta MARTA system and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Chris, an ASCE fellow, currently serves on the CMAA Foundation Board and its international committee, having been a past executive committee member and on the board of directors, as well as being elected as a CMAA fellow.



2008 Construction Management Award Recipient Chosen

Randy LarsonRandy L. Larson, P.E., M.ASCE, has been selected as the 2008 recipient of the ASCE Construction Management Award, for his exemplary performance as construction manager for multiple major infrastructure projects; including the I-75 Salt Creek Emergency Reconstruction in Florida, the Bayside Bridge project in Florida, the Florida Keys Road and Bridge Replacement Program, the Felsenthal Lock and Dam in Arkansas, and the rehabilitation of the Guajatca Dam in Puerto Rico.  His dedication to ensuring quality construction and personnel safety, as well as having a superb understanding of sound engineering and construction techniques on each assignment, led to each of these highly complex projects being completed ahead of schedule and under budget. 

Mr. Larson is a registered professional engineer in five southeastern states and Puerto Rico, a registered general contractor in Florida, and a certified construction manager. He is Executive Vice President and National Service Director for The PBSJ Corporation in Tampa, FL.  In 1997, he launched PBS&J Constructors, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of The PBSJ Corporation that delivers at-risk construction management services to public and private clients with horizontal and vertical construction needs. Mr. Larson served as president of the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) 2006-2007and as a board member and officer since 2003.  He has been a member of ASCE for nearly 15 years.

Mr. Larson is actively involved with his community, Plant City, Florida, and has served three terms as their mayor. In recognition for his successful efforts to convert the old Cincinnati Reds spring training complex into headquarters for the International Softball Federation, a new city recreational complex was named in his honor, the Randy L. Larson Softball Fourplex. He was also recognized in 2005 as “Strong Leader of the Year” by the Tampa Metropolitan YMCA for his significant contributions to the community.



CI Establishes Second Local Chapter

In March 2008, the CI Board of Governors formally approved the Construction Institute Local Chapter of the Sacramento Section of ASCE. The Board, composed of Larry Smith - Chair, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; Greg Zeiss - Co-Chair, HDR; Melissa Woodruff - Co-Chair, VSCE; Russ Sherman - Secretary/Treasurer, Kiewit Corporation; Dan Hart - Advisor, Kiewit Corporation; Richard Raine - Advisor, Kiewit Corporation; Louay Odwaidat - Advisor, Envirocon; Sean Rhoades - Advisor, Envirocon; and Jon Balzer - Member at Large, Granite Construction, held their first meeting on March 24, 2008.  One of the action items decided upon in the meeting was the development of a Kickoff Dinner Meeting on May 28, 2008.  It will be held at the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza, featuring a keynote presentation by Marvin Oey, the Director of the Construction Institute. This event will also feature Ric Reinhardt of MBK Engineers and John Basset of SAFCA presenting the “State of the Levees” in Natomas. As one of its first events, the Local Chapter sponsored a CM Standards of Practice Review Course in February, 2008. The Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) Sacramento Post, and the Construction Management Association of America (CMAA) Northern California Chapter, conducted the CMAA Standards of Practice Course.  The course reviewed subjects and materials applicable to the field of Professional Construction Management "Standards of Practice,"deriving its content from the Construction Management Core Competencies and the CMAA Body of Knowledge. Forty-one students attended and completed the course, earning 24 PDH or 2.4 CEU.

The feedback from all students was positive, and many agreed to form work groups for completing applications for the Certified Construction Manager (CCM) Exam, and study groups for reviewing each of the instructional modules in preparation for taking the CCM Exam at the CMAA National Conference in San Francisco.



CI Board of Governors Soliciting Nominations - Deadline Extended

The Nominating Committee of the Construction Institute of ASCE (CI) is soliciting expressions of interest from CI members in good standing for consideration by the Nominating Committee for the 4-year term on the Board of Governors commencing October 1, 2008.  To be considered by the Nominating Committee, a potential nominee must be a member in good standing of CI at the time of nomination.  Student members are not eligible for consideration.

If you are interested in being considered by the Nominating Committee, please send your resume, highlighting your activities in CI and ASCE, along with a signed statement indicating your willingness to stand for election if nominated and serve if elected, and a short biographical statement (150 words maximum) to the Director of CI at ASCE headquarters.  This information must be received by CI staff no later than 5:00 pm ET on Thursday May 15, 2008.

2008 Concrete Technology Forum

CI has joined the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association as an Organizational Partner for the 2008 Concrete Technology Forum: Focus on Sustainable Development, being held May 20-22, 2008, at the Marriott Denver Tech Center.

According to NRMCA, the forum will bring researchers and practitioners together to discuss the latest advances, technical knowledge, continuing research, tools and solutions for sustainable
development.  Researchers, engineers, architects, contractors, concrete producers, public works officials, material suppliers, and concrete industry professionals are invited to attend, and will be eligible to earn Professional Development Hours.

Session Topics will include:

  • Pervious Concrete Systems
  • Concrete’s Impact on Urban Heat Islands
  • The Carbon Footprint of Concrete
  • Sustainable Development Initiatives
  • Optimizing Recycled Content

2008 AAA Construction Conference

The American Arbitration Association will be holding its annual Construction Conference on Friday, May 30, 2008, at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York in New York, NY.  The theme of this year's conference is: ADR Works! Choosing the Right Resolution Options.

Industry experts will offer guidance on tailoring alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes to the needs of construction-industry disputes, including a session covering the recent changes in construction industry standard-form contract documents.

Attendees come from widely varied areas of the construction field, including construction owners, contractors, developers, architects, construction attorneys and engineers.

Symposium on Shotcrete and Waterproofing for Underground Structures

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc. will be holding a Symposium on Shotcrete and Waterproofing for Underground Structures, May 5-6, 2008. The symposium will present lessons learned from recent projects, discuss available technology for tunnel waterproofing, review critical requirements for successful waterproofing applications, and demonstrate the role of shotcrete as it relates to successful waterproofing of tunnels.  CEU's will be given for attendance of this symposium.
